Connecting the Humanities through Research Infrastructures

International audienceSeveral Research Infrastructures(RIs)exist in the Humanities and Social Sciences, some –such as CLARIN, DARIAH and CESSDA –which address specific areas of interest, i.e. linguistic studies, digital humanities and social science data archives. RIs are also unique in their scope and application, largely tailored to their specific community needs. However, commonalities do exist and it is recognised that benefits are to be gained from these such as efficient use of resources, enabling multi-disciplinary research and sharing good practices. As such,a bridging project PARTHENOS has worked closely with CLARIN and DARIAH as well as ARIADNE (archaeology), CENDARI (history), EHRI (holocaust studies) and E-RIHS (heritage science) to iden-tify, develop and promote these commonalities. Evaluation of MT Systems: A Programmatic View

Most MT systems seem to aim at simulation of the behaviour of human translators, although this is not very often stated as explicitly as in e.g. [JW87, page 136]). Like human translators they translate texts normally not written with the specific goal of translation in mind and just as in the case of human translators their translations will normally be revised prior to distribution to the end user. This predominance of what we will call the Human Translator Metaphor has – as a natural consequence – led to a view of MT evaluation where the main purpose of evaluation is to determine to what extent the makers of a system have succeeded in mimicking the human translator. Yet it has to be noted that this interpretation of the notion of MT system is the one least likely to be successful over the next 10 or 20 years. There has been no real breakthrough over the last decade, and there is little evidence that the next 10 years will present us with a revolution in MT. 3rd cycleThis webinar will provide a theoretical basis for a general understanding of the digital and infrastructural turn in the (Digital) Humanities and Cultural Heritage along with theoretical and critical reflections around the topic: Which opportunities and challenges do Cultural Heritage and Digital Humanities Research Infrastructures offer for research(ers)? The webinar will further explain how different stakeholders can engage with Research Infrastructures (community engagement and user engagement). Examples are research communities and networks, transnational digital collections, thematic working groups, overarching organisations (ERIC platforms, the Research Data Alliance), conferences and workshops, Transnational Access, Research Infrastructures in Academic Curricula. As a general introductory webinar it will also touch on some aspects of the other webinars in the PARTHENOS Webinar Series including a short introduction of the research lifecycle. This webinar will feature “teasers” from several Research Infrastructures, such as short introduction videos or webcontent)
